True stripes…

read: http://www.montesolberg.com/2006/01/putting-mock-in-democracy.htm

So yeah, the cons are so angry at winning the election that they are looking polling station by polling station to find irregularities that they don’t like. Without remembering that every polling station is supposed to have a party representative to watch the count and such. (Remember that page I posted with how votes are supposed to be counted? So issues like this are not supposed to happen?) Apparently that doesn’t matter though, because it makes no sense to him that someone wouldn’t vote conservative, much less an entire reserve of people.

Also, his blog entry shows no class whatsoever. That initial women’s studies comment is pointless and just shows what the conservatives really think about independent women.

Edit:

http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/2006/01/29/merasty-harrison060129.html

So yeah, apparently there has already been a review of the count sheets, and the win was very slim in this riding. For the conservatives to make their complaints, then the initial counts must not have been done in the complete manner as recommended. From the CBC article on how voting is supposed to be done:

“Party representatives (scrutineers) are there as witnesses to make sure the whole process is fair. If none are available (these are volunteer positions), then the people working the registration desk, or regular electors, can serve the purpose. (Scrutineers also keep track of who has voted, and let the campaign office know. The office will then call people to encourage them to vote.)”

Unfortunately, I do not know all of the details of this matter, and I will acknowledge that, and will reserve my final judgement of the situation until the situation is resolved. Yet at the same time, the attitude taken by Solberg in that blog article shows very little class and is completely ineffective at encouraging anyone to listen to his concerns or believe him.

Oh well, I, unfortunately, expect to see more of this style of entries until the Libs get a new leader and the government falls. (The Libs cannot let the government fall until they have a new leader, otherwise they are guaranteed to lose seats nationwide.)

Conservative ethics?

read: http://www.cbc.ca/story/canada/national/2006/01/25/ethics-probe060125.html

From the article:

"While it is not clear whether Mr. Grewal genuinely sought an inducement to change his vote or whether he just acted the part in an attempt to entrap Mr. Dosanjh, his actions were, in either case, extremely inappropriate," the commissioner, Bernard Shapiro, said in a report issued on Wednesday.

I could say so much right now. However, I will leave it at that. The Cons showed during the election that their members are willing to hide truths to get elected. (Albeit, I do applaud Harper for punishing his member accordingly. Too bad they did not pay enough attention to prevent it from happening.) Now, the Cons have also shown that they were willing to resort to "inappropriate acts" to get their way. I do have to admit, Grewal did not run this time around. However, he also was never punished by the Cons for his behaviour.

Considering these guys are running the show now, it is something to ponder at the very least. How can they stop corruption, when they fail to stop it in their own ranks.

pla.nit.ca web badges

picture picture

Because I am trying to create and add badges to support all of the various sites I like. I created a couple of Pla.nit.ca web badges. One for Evil Death Rays (EDR) and one for Human Cannonballs (HCB). If you are nitiot, and you want a customized one for your site, just let me know and I’ll make it up for you.

Well, elections are over.

Three things happened last night that make me rather happy:

1. Martin stepped down, which marks the end of the Martinites and their era as head of the Liberals. Finally, the Liberals will be able to try to find a real charismatic leader and regroup to win back the next election. Or at least, the next election won’t be about the Gomery Report or corruption anymore. That is over with.

2. Harper has a very small minority. Right now the parliament is primarily left, so he won’t be able to enact very much social conservative agenda. Yet, having a small minority will pull him more center and probably lead them to make a few pretty big mistakes that will will hurt them in their next campaign.

3. The NDP did amazingly well and gained lots of seats and votes across the country. I am very happy for Layton and crew, and I know they will use it to really help Canadians. I hope they learn from this minority, and will be able to double their seats again in the next parliament.

Oh yeah, and one thing I am somewhat happy with.

4. The Bloc have lost a lot of their vote in Quebec. Due to our first-past-the-post system, they still got too many seats with respect to their votes. Yet, they lost 5% of the the pop vote in Quebec, and this may signal the end or at least the diminishment of the Bloc. As much as I dislike the Conservatives, I do not want to see Quebec leave Canada either. So it is nice to see most of the Con gains were from Bloc seats in Quebec.

Now, comes the hard part. The NDP have to do again what they did so well in the last parliament, which was force the government to keep it’s promises and make it work again for Canadians; The Liberals need to regroup and get a real leader (I am betting on Iggy, myself.); and the Cons need to work with the other parties to stay in power, something they were not very good at in the last parliament.

This should be a fun political season this year. :)

For those betting amongst you: I say the government falls in 6-12 months. Unless, of course, the conservatives really have gotten rid of their social conservative agenda.

How your vote is counted (as a canadian)

read: http://www.cbc.ca/canadavotes/voterstoolkit/votecounting.html

What really caught my attention with this method is how difficult it would be for any party to break the rules or skew the votes. Every vote is read out loud and verified by multiple party representatives.

Unlike the American electronic voting, where you really do not know who you voted for. Here, once the ballot is in the box, you are good to go. :) Canadian voting, simple, easy, safe… Vote for your favourite candidate today.

Remember to go out and vote today

I could give a hundred reasons why it is a good idea to vote. Especially in this election, but I will let you choose your own.

Please go out and vote, even if you decide to vote for a throwaway party as a protest vote. If that throwaway party gets 3% of the vote, they get $1.75 for each vote you give them. :)

If the polls hold up

If people vote the way the polls (http://pollingreport.ca) shows. All I need to say is… Ladies and gentlemen, meet your next ruling party of Canada:

Prime Minister Harper, and the Conservatives.

I hope you enjoy it.

Hire me! I am not allowed to do all the awful things I want to do.

Read: The Star Article

Quote from article: ‘It’s a bit like if that little girl from Stephen King’s novel Firestarter, the one who could set things on fire just by thinking about it, were to apply to manage your lumber company. "As long as you’ve got smoke detectors and sprinklers," she might say, "there’s really nothing for you to worry about."

What Harper said was, "The reality is that we will have, for some time to come, a Liberal Senate, a Liberal civil service at least senior levels have been appointed by the Liberals and courts that have been appointed by the Liberals. So these are obviously checks on the power of a Conservative government."’

Beautifully said.

Global Warming Flash

See: http://www.leonardodicaprio.org/whatsimportant/globalwarming_movie01.htm

This is a very interesting flash ad that I encountered when reading over Green Party of Canada stuff. Now, here is an important addendum, Canada is a nation in the unique position to become one of the leading nations in energy independence and renewable energy sources. It is only up to us to decide if we are willing to take that step.
