How blind can you possibly be?

Emerson is now saying that he is not going to listen to partisans and zealots when they ask for his resignation. So by that he is going to be listening to a lot of other people, because every news outlet I read on Saturday noted that while the protest rally was organized by the provincial NDP, it was attended by members of _all_ parties. Including the Conservatives. A significant portion of his riding feels disenfranchised by him and he is going to just sit back and give himself excuses so he can sleep better. If he wants to delude himself that people who believe their vote should matter are zealots and partisans, then he is as bad as any other elitist politician in history who believed that their opinion is more important that that of their constituents.

It is frustrating to see the sheer amount of outrage in his riding and yet he just ignores them entirely. He openly admits that he is not going to resign. He does not care about their opinions. It reminds me of a child covering their ears and going "LALALALALALALALA" when people are telling them what they are doing wrong, and their childish mentality cannot accept that they are doing something inherently wrong. These people are doing all they can with peaceful protest and nothing is getting through. What else can a person do in a democracy when their rights have been violated by a politician?

I found http://recalldavidemerson.com today, and I encourage people to visit it and read the comments, and perhaps leave your own. Personally, I am becoming disillusioned with our democracy when the two parties who get the most votes are so full of liars and hypocrites that they will openly disenfranchise their constituents to gain political power. Now, I must admit, as much as I dislike social conservatism, I do not disagree with some of the populous policies of the old reform. They believed the senate should be elected (if it was elected long term that would be a good plan). They believed that backbenchers should be given more powers (Look at David Turner and see what Harper really thinks about that). They believed that the constituents should be listened to above all else… Harper’s election campaign consisted of these policies and how they would restore dignity to government. Now, he has turned into a iron-fisted leader punishing those within his own party who are willing to point out the hypocrisy, and convincing those members of other parties with nothing on their mind then political power to join his party.

How can anyone have faith in a democracy when it is run like this, where an entire riding of people are ignored. More than 80% of the riding did not vote conservative, and yet that is what they are given, and there seems to be nothing that anyone can do to fix the problem. The Liberals are not going to get a full election before November, and the NDP and Bloc do not have enough votes to bring down the government. Short of making a retroactive law that would force Emerson to run in a byelection, there is nothing any party can do. As far as I know, it is impossible to force a candidate to run in a byelection. So, the constituents of the riding of Vancouver-Kingsway have been disenfranchised, and Emerson shows that it does not matter who you vote for, because they will do whatever they want once they get elected. The Liberals are not going to do anything about it likely, and the Conservatives are so power-drunk that they do not even realize they are ignoring their own ethics, or worse they do not care.

Short of a miracle of having the Liberals somehow bring down the government short of November and run a good race without an "official" leader, this is what we are stuck with: Harper, a politician who does not stick to his guns and his party made up of mostly people too scared to stand up for their constituents and morals after they get elected into power… For the next 8 months. Fun. I would like to believe the NDP will be able to keep them in line, but without the Liberals being willing to bring down the government, the NDP will not be able to do much.

Now, I have to say one more thing. Except for David Turner, I am exceptionally disappointed with those members of the Conservatives I am familiar with in Alberta and elsewhere who do believe in a real democracy and yet somehow are afraid to stand up for Canada, and tell Harper and Emerson what they are doing is wrong for their constituents and wrong for Canada.
