How can people harbour so much hate?

I was sucked by liberal catnip (via VLWC) to read some comments at Small Dead Animals. It is truly amazing the amount of hatred people have for people they do not even know, just because those people are different than them. Not being in Ontario I was not there, but I have had a few friends at the parade and they told me it went quite well and it was nice to see so many people come out on a nice sunny day to enjoy it.

It is really quite sad that some people are filled with so much hatred that seeing the happiness and community of other people leads them to the behaviour seen in SDA. :(

Never really into the meme-thing, however I gave in and lifted it from Diet Coupon, via The Vast Left Wing Conspiracy. If you want to be sucked in as well, you can find out which philosophers you’re most closely aligned with.
But seriously Jeremy Bentham?!?! wtf?

What is wrong with Edmontonians?

In the last few days I have heard the most xenophobic, racist crap from Edmontonians and stories from my friends, that it almost makes me embarassed to be an Edmontonian.

Some choice quotes from the last week or so:

“Fucking Foreigners!” - yelled at my fiance and me as we were driving down Mayfield road in her car, which I had decked out with Canada day gear — a flag, and a Canada magnet. (She’s an American, btw)

“What’s wrong with them?” “Oh, don’t worry about them, they are from fucking Montreal” - Yelled at my fiance and me as we were skating on the ice rink in West Ed. Probably was aimed at the fact that I cannot skate very well and I am wearing a Festiblues t-shirt I got from Montreal.

“Fuck you nigger!” - Yelled at a friend of mine and his wife as they were walking down Jasper ave shortly after the Oilers won a game and people were celebrating.

Now, seriously, I love Alberta and Canada a lot. Which is why I am working so hard to remain here (Even though I could easily go to the States or Europe for a career if I wanted to) and I am continuing my studies in Calgary. Yet, this type of tripe and bullshit I am hearing from fellow Canadians is embarassing. Especially when one of the things Canadians are proud of is their diversity and multiculturalism, and I have been trying to show my fiance that in Canada. Now, I know these are all isolated incidents, but I am afraid it may be a sign of things to come. Especially since I have never encountered so much of it in such a short period of time before…

Oh well, I just needed to get that off my chest. :( Hopefully they will remain just isolated incidents.

“This is not a political issue…

This is a moral issue.” Plain and simple.

Just watched an Inconvenient Truth today, while I was disappointed by how little was said about actual actions that can be taken, it was a pretty good movie and I highly recommend anyone out there to watch it. Especially Canadians who support Harper’s initiative (or lack thereof) for the environment.

Country-specific VLWC sites.

While working on multiple languages on VLWC, we also added the ability to view only the blogs from specific countries. Now, if you are from Canada, America, Australia, New Zealand, or Britain, you can view each those country’s blogs by just clicking on the flag to the right listing the number of members from those nations.

Have fun,

Le grand complot de la gauche est pret!

With a large amount of help from thejf , we have been able to successfully complete the french version of the Vast Left Wing Conspiracyle grand complot de la gauche. Now, hopefully, with the addition of a few french language blogs, we will be able to turn the VLWC/GCG into a truly international conspiracy, beyond even language barriers.

As well, the code base has been completely refactored to allow for easier translation to other languages, and we have the translations for Spanish and Norwegian. So, hopefully, we will have La inmensa conspiracion de izquierdas and Venstresidens Store Konspirasjon ready in a week or so as well. If anyone reading this speaks another language, and is willing to translate a few dozen sentences and titles, please let me know. The more languages the VLWC can be translated to, the more people will be able to participate in the conspiracy. :)

If anyone knows non-english bloggers (or even more English bloggers) who are into left-wing politics, please let them know about the VLWC and see if they want to join. As we get more bloggers from different languages, we will be able to do even fancier and spiffier things to improve the conspiracy.

I have to admit though, the site is becoming a really interesting read with left-wing blogs from the UK, New Zealand and even Australia starting to pop up. It is nice to get a truly international perspective on left-wing politics and the current global situation.
Have fun,

In the words of Ricky (from TPB)…

“I hate to say I toldchaso, but I toldchaso, I *****’n toldchaso”

From the Globe and Mail:

The dollar surged 1.33 cents Friday - its biggest one day jump since Nov. 21, 1988 - on word that the Canadian economy added a stunning 96,700 net jobs in May, sending the country’s unemployment rate to its lowest level since December, 1974.

The report exceeded economists’ expectations, and suggested the higher dollar is not harming Canada’s labour market. The unexpectedly strong job creation led economist to point to tighter interest rates in the coming months.

What? A higher dollar isn’t bad for the Canadian economy? Who would have thought it? Oh yeah! Me! Heh…
