A Statement by the POTUS

From the Whitehouse’s website. (Emphasises mine.)
—-

Today, on the United Nations International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, the United States declares its strong solidarity with torture victims across the world. Torture anywhere is an affront to human dignity everywhere. We are committed to building a world where human rights are respected and protected by the rule of law.

Freedom from torture is an inalienable human right. The Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment, ratified by the United States and more than 130 other countries since 1984, forbids governments from deliberately inflicting severe physical or mental pain or suffering on those within their custody or control. Yet torture continues to be practiced around the world by rogue regimes whose cruel methods match their determination to crush the human spirit. Beating, burning, rape, and electric shock are some of the grisly tools such regimes use to terrorize their own citizens. These despicable crimes cannot be tolerated by a world committed to justice.

Notorious human rights abusers, including, among others, Burma, Cuba, North Korea, Iran, and Zimbabwe, have long sought to shield their abuses from the eyes of the world by staging elaborate deceptions and denying access to international human rights monitors. Until recently, Saddam Hussein used similar means to hide the crimes of his regime. With Iraq’s liberation, the world is only now learning the enormity of the dictator’s three decades of victimization of the Iraqi people. Across the country, evidence of Baathist atrocities is mounting, including scores of mass graves containing the remains of thousands of men, women, and children and torture chambers hidden inside palaces and ministries. The most compelling evidence of all lies in the stories told by torture survivors, who are recounting a vast array of sadistic acts perpetrated against the innocent. Their testimony reminds us of their great courage in outlasting one of history’s most brutal regimes, and it reminds us that similar cruelties are taking place behind the closed doors of other prison states.

The United States is committed to the world-wide elimination of torture and we are leading this fight by example. I call on all governments to join with the United States and the community of law-abiding nations in prohibiting, investigating, and prosecuting all acts of torture and in undertaking to prevent other cruel and unusual punishment. I call on all nations to speak out against torture in all its forms and to make ending torture an essential part of their diplomacy. I further urge governments to join America and others in supporting torture victims’ treatment centers, contributing to the UN Fund for the Victims of Torture, and supporting the efforts of non-governmental organizations to end torture and assist its victims.

No people, no matter where they reside, should have to live in fear of their own government. Nowhere should the midnight knock foreshadow a nightmare of state-commissioned crime. The suffering of torture victims must end, and the United States calls on all governments to assume this great mission.

—-

Wow, I agree with him fully. I think that the United States should prohibit, investigate and prosecute people who condone torture and believe it is an acceptable practice. In fact, if the US is leading the way in this matter, I can think of one nation right away that they could investigate, and prosecute… Not that it is really going to happen. Heaven forbid governments are not run by a lying lot of hypocrites.
But yeah, IOKIYAC, eh?

We shall be free

Everyone should hear this:

This ain’t comin’ from no prophet
Just an ordinary man
When I close my eyes I see
The way this world shall be
When we all walk hand in hand

When the last child cries for a crust of bread
When the last man dies for just words that he said
When there’s shelter over the poorest head
We shall be free

When the last thing we notice is the color of skin
And the first thing we look for is the beauty within
When the skies and the oceans are clean again
Then we shall be free

We shall be free
We shall be free
Stand straight, walk proud
‘Cause we shall be free
When we’re free to love anyone we choose
When this world’s big enough for all different views
When we all can worship from our own kind of pew
Then we shall be free
We shall be free

We shall be free
Have a little faith
Hold out
‘Cause we shall be free

And when money talks for the very last time
And nobody walks a step behind
When there’s only one race and that’s mankind
Then we shall be free

We shall be free
We shall be free
Stand straight, walk proud, have a little faith, hold out
We shall be free

We shall be free
We shall be free
Stand straight, have a little faith

We shall be free

Just needed to be said

My sister-in-law’s homecoming speech

This is the first honest and truthful thing I have heard come from the states in such a long time. Emily seems to be a really great girl. It’s encouraging to know that there are some Americans who are honest and truthful and try to stick to those ideals of life.

She’s Emily Cogsdill, and she approved this message.

Doublespeak.

We are not going to abolish this law, we are just going to make it illegal for anyone to take us to court if we do break this law.

Dispatches from the Culture War makes a great point regarding the Torture bill:

But that last part seems to be the key: this law forbids anyone from taking a violation of the Geneva Conventions to court. Here is the text of Sec. 7(a):

(a) In General- No person may invoke the Geneva Conventions, or any protocols thereto, in any habeas or civil action or proceeding to which the United States, or a current or former officer, employee, member of the Armed Forces, or other agent of the United States, is a party, as a source of rights in any court of the United States or its States or territories.

So great, the American government is so twisted up in it’s own doublespeak that rather than attack a law directly, they just make it illegal to take anyone they like “army officers” to court for breaking these laws. Effectively making these individuals above the law of the land, and creating a second class of citizen. A class which does not have to obey those basic laws the government itself put into place.

I do not understand why the American people are not rising up today to show any outrage. I read a lot of rhetoric on blogs and such, but no real action. Everyone is just sitting on their hands, even though their government just took their right to not be detained without charge away, and even worse gave themselves the right to torture you if they so wish.

It’s just disgusting how complacent they all are. If any organized group of working people actually wanted to, they could shut down an entire city or even a state in protest of these horrible, inhuman, immoral laws that have been enacted.

Appropriate comic of the day

I am so glad that the Americans have clarified how they are allowed to torture people the president doesn’t like. As well as detain them without charge and all. That was definitely something that needed to be done in the name of “protecting the fatherlan… ahem.. I mean homeland.”

If this is what they do to their own party members..

imagine what they would do if they could get away with it to the 60% of Canadians who don’t vote for them? Especially considering all this guy wants is for the nominations to be handled in a way that follows party rules.
Price Quote from CTV Article:

“Jim Hawkes’ Varsity home was deliberately set on fire late Monday night.  …

He says the fire is connected to a lawsuit he and 10 other Tory party members have launched against the Calgary West riding association and the Conservative Party of Canada.

The group says the nomination process to find a candidate to run in the next federal election violated party rules.

Hawkes believes this was a warning that he should drop the lawsuit.”

Maybe it should serve as a warning to anyone who thinks the Cons are a reasonable party to vote for.

A few appropriate quotes

Today is a very dark day in the United States, so I thought I would post a few appropriate quotes that come to mind regarding the situation.

“The healthy man does not torture others — generally it is the tortured who turn into torturers. ” - Carl Jung

Shamefully we now learn that Saddam’s torture chambers reopened under new management, U.S. management.” - Edward Kennedy

How fortunate for leaders that men do not think. ” - Adolf Hitler

“Every nation has the government it deserves” - Joseph de Maistre

WHAT???!???

Harper’s spokesperson:

Mr. Harper chose not to explain himself in the House. But Carolyn Stewart-Olsen, a spokeswoman for the Prime Minister, said she thought the remarks were clear. The military gets stronger when casualties occur, she said, because it means more money is put into equipment and recruiting.

I could write a lot of spitefilled crap about this, but I think it just speaks for itself. For those of you who support the troops, this is what “Canada’s New Government” really thinks about those people who they send out to fight and die.
Galloping Beaver has some comments. CathieFromCanada has some really solid comments.

Friggin’ heck.
